Before moving to Chicago in the summer of 2008, Peter was the city of Bend reporter at he Bulletin in Bend, Ore. His series of stories on the flawed purchase of used buses led to the ouster of the city’s public works director, who approved the purchase even though he knew the buses had serious mechanical problems. Peter also broke stories of the plans of several companies to relocate or expand at Juniper Ridge, an ambitious 1,500-acre mixed-use project on land owned by the city.
Peter has been the aviation news editor for the pilot Web site iPilot since 2004 and interned at Egypt Today magazine in Cairo, Egypt in 2006. He has also written for the Religion News Service in Washington, D.C., and for the Walla Walla (Wash.) Union-Bulletin. His photographs have appeared in all of the above publications as well.
On the flying side, Peter has spent nearly 400 hours in the left and right seats of small single-engine planes since he started flying in 2002. He is currently a certified flight instructor for single-engine planes; he also holds a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating, allowing him to fly for hire and in clouds and low-visibility conditions.
Though he has taken a hiatus from it in recent years, Peter also enjoys working in theaters and designing lights for theatrical productions. During his time at Whitman, he worked for two years as Harper Joy Theatre's Master Electrician and created the lighting designs for five shows.
